The Ultimate Truth- Understanding Illusion

The earlier discussion ended with Research Scientist(RS)’s question to Guru’s explanation on Paramaatma & Jeevaatma, and this question makes the current discussion that will try to answer ‘How? Why? & What has to be Realized?’

Here it goes…

RS: The thin line that is separating Me, the Jeevaatma, from the Supreme Paramaatma stuck my mind. After listening to the entire functioning, I wonder what could be that thin line that is making a big difference. I feel some ‘incompleteness’ in understanding.

Guru: Yes, that’s because of ‘illusion’.

RS: Why illusion and what’s that?

Guru: In a single word, it’s called Maya. But if you want to realise, it’s a big thing. In fact, something that is inside and out.  

In the entire process, assuming you to be present in every case is called illusion.

RS: How is that? Please explain in detail.

Guru: Obviously, you cannot assume of being something that is not actually you. If done, that will be called an imagination or illusion. Surprisingly, you will face results in real time, which could be happy or sad or frustrated or much bigger, overall, positive or negative. Finally, you will have lost track of what you are supposed to do and the resultant is you are in ‘illusion/Maaya.

Assumption, results in real-time: For example, while watching a movie, you exhibit different emotions to different scenes. You’re responding accordingly taking it as your personal feeling even though you are not at all part of that screen. You are just imagining, but reaction is taking place in real time. Why is that happening? Because, you are carrying emotions from something that is neither you nor related to you.

Losing track of actual task: Best example for this could be an internet search page with lot of hyperlinks that lead to different pages. While searching for something in that page, the user comes across various related links. Clicking on one of the sub-links opens another page, which will again have various hyperlinks. This is an iterative process. In the entire process, there is a chance of user losing track of his actual task by looking at various other related/irrelated things.

This way, assumption can put you in an emotional state that is not related to you or side-line you from your actual ask.

Same is the case of human body. You tend to feel that every aspect of functionality within and outside the body as something that is related to you. Eventually, you end up bearing the results of things you assumed as ours by reacting to them. This happens only if you don’t realise who you are. (Refer to second round of discussion on Self).

Mind is thinking, ears are hearing, and all other body parts are performing their roles, and each of them have a name and respective functioning. Body parts are working among themselves in collaboration, solely because of Paramaatma.

As you land in such a situation, you start thinking yourself as the body and assume all the bodily activities and related attachments as yours, which can be relations, among others. Finally, you end up in this web of organs-associated relations thus, losing a complete track of the fact that you are Jeevaatma and what your purpose is reach.

This is the thin line that made your understanding incomplete. So, you should always be conscious about what you are and then what are you for, in absence of which, you are controlled by Maaya/Illusion.

You should always be conscious that it’s the body & associated parts that are doing their tasks and you are just a witness. You are neither related to it nor part of it/expecting its results.

Here is where the real challenge lies. Do you think the attachments you had with this body before realisation will leave you? Not at all.

During the process, you have to be very careful that supressing thoughts/emotions will give you bad results at times when you, by mistake, surrender to them. Rather than fighting or supressing them, you should realise that they are doing their tasks perfectly (thinking, hearing, talking, etc) and in fact, keep questioning self as to ‘what my job is?’

Maintaining such status forever is the challenge one has to achieve through practice.

RS: That’s pretty clear. But, I doubt a continuous witnessing of these bodily actions would side line me at some point, as I got used to it over the years. If at all that happens, all my efforts go futile and I will have to fight back to identify self. To be open, this is the question that is haunting me after thinking to realise.

How can I overcome this forever? That too when I/Jeevaatma have nothing to do with this bodily attachments and materialistic things around, then, “What is my focus point? Where do I belong to? Why am I here in this body? What is the purpose of my existence? and What is my target?”

The Ultimate Truth- Knowing Self

A continuation of the previous conversation…

After listening to Guru’s statements, the Research Scientist (RS) understood that the body is just a combination of flesh and the truth about ‘Me/Self’ is not what he thought, but something else that is yet to be explored. He is currently thinking on finding ‘what actually is he?’, henceforth referred to as self.

Conversation Begins…

RS: One important thing I clearly understood by our earlier conversation is the humans’ general tendency of ‘denying the existence of something by ignoring self-incapability of identifying it’, which is also a fault in me. May be, identifying that itself makes way clear.

Guru: That’s true.

RS: Now, the thought that has been haunting me is about searching self. May I have clarity on this?

Guru: For this, you first need to have clarity on what is around the ‘self’ hiding it and obstructing you from finding it

RS: Hmm. Please go ahead

Guru: There are 24 very important things one should have clarity on.

  • Five Mahaa Panchabhothaas – Earth (Prithvi), Water(Apah), Fire(Tej), Air(Vayu) and Sky (Aakash) based on which, everything else formed and composed of;
  • Five Pancha Karmendriyas – Mouth, Hands, Legs and two Secreting organs, which just follow assigned tasks without any knowledge;
  • Five Pancha Gnaanendriyas- Eye, Nose, Tongue, Ear and Skin, which act as transmitting media with the each of their five individual qualities, such as See, Smell, Taste, Listen and Sense
  • There are four important units that manage all the above- Manas, Buddhi (Intellect), Chitt (Storage) and Aham (Ego)

All in total, there are 24 important units that are playing the game of life.  Every activity we do only happens between these units- from starting to ending.

Organs act as the receptors to the stimuli generated by each of the Mahaa Panchabhootas- Nose (Smell) For Earth, Tongue (Taste) for Water, Eyes (Light & Visibility) for Fire, Skin (Touch & Feel) for Air and Ears (Sound) for Sky. Needless to say, organs themselves are composed of Mahaa Panchabhootas.

Coming to the lastly-listed four units: Manas involves in Sankalpa-Vikalpa Sanghaatam, which means generating and taking back of thoughts; Buddhi decides on performing/not performing the tasks based on the inputs from Manas; Chitt is the memory storage that stores responses (happy/sad, interesting/uninteresting, love/hatred, etc), out of Buddhi’s actions, for future purpose to bring them in to picture whenever needed; Aham is the one that transforming our behaviour based on the inputs from Buddhi, Manas and Chittam generated over the time, thus fully controlling our actions

These four are something special unlike organs. They are not seen, only felt

RS: Understood that ‘organs do their assigned tasks of seeing, smelling, hearing, responding, moving, acting, etc, all based on the signals they get from four special units’. But, there is no mention of ‘Self/Me’ anywhere? Where is it? What’s its function and what it does?

Guru: Self is a standalone unit that is just observing all these activities as a ‘witness’. It is neither becoming part nor doing any activity other than witnessing the whole system. But, the whole system gets identification by this Self, in absence of which, we call it a ‘Dead Body’. It’s this Self that one refers to have left the body when someone is dead.

Organs become rotten or dead at one point of time, but self doesn’t, forever. Because, it’s not a physical form to perish. It exists and can be felt, but not seen with the natural eye! It is formless. It’s Self that is the actual Life/ You/Me, not the physical body that is made of flesh.

RS: Set of organs is made of flesh and all of them are connected through nerves and joints. Whereas, set of special units are not physical in nature. Above all, the main unit Self has no form and is the actual life, but is neither related/connected to the organ set nor the special set.

How could the four formless units generate information/signals and how are the organs receiving and responding when they don’t have any knowledge to act by themselves? Above all: When Self is the actual life, why aren’t we able to recognise or find it? Is it remaining hidden by itself or is that our incapability to find out?

What is making the lifeless organs work? What is managing the communication between the physical organs and formless units? How is the entire communication running?

Guru: These are the questions one should self. For everything to work, the basic thing that is needed is energy. Thus, every organ/body part is filled with some energy that is powering it to act whenever required.

Every organ/part (Indriya) is made/composed of five basic elements i.e. Mahaa Panchabhoothas. As discussed earlier, each of these five elements have individual qualities by nature that also represent the qualities of Indriyas (Five Karmendriyaas and five Gnaanendriyaas)- Nose (Smell) For Earth, Tongue (Taste) for Water, Eyes (Light & Visibility) for Fire, Skin (Touch & Feel) for Air and Ears (Sound) for Sky.

Since organs are made of these elements, they obviously possess the qualities of these five elements, and thus are able to act accordingly. This energy that is powering organs to function is called Chaitanya Shakti (Meaning: Energising Power). It’s the same power that is also managing and regulating the four special units. It’s also the same power that is creating, managing and terminating each and every function. This Chaitanya Shakti is called Paramaatma, meaning The Supreme.

RS: Is this a energising power a single thing that is controlling everything from a single place or multiple sources at multiple places?

Guru: No. It is a single source that is spread across multiple locations to execute multiple tasks (for example: A single person doing multiple things). It has no specific place. It is the only one that is in everything and that itself is everything. It is performing tasks, but is neither becoming any task nor owned by any unit.

RS: I find a similarity in the properties of Paramaatma and Self. Can you explain?

Guru: While the Supreme that is controlling everything is called Parabrahma (the supreme), the Self that is witnessing everything is called Jeevaatma. With a thin line of difference, Jeevaatma seems part of Parabrahma, but is actually the Paramaata itself. This Jeevatma is the actual Me/You/Self.

RS: Oh! Ok. So, why am I separated from Paramaatma and thinking of this physical body? What is that the thin line of difference between Paramaatma and Jeevaatma?

The Ultimate Truth- An Introduction

We often come across people saying, ‘there is no god and it’s all foolish’, some ‘believe it outside and doubt internally’. Whereas, some blindly believe it in and out. Keeping away all the high-level explanations, we tend to take up the case in a simple way.  Here it goes….

This is a discussion between a Research Scientist (RS) and a Guru, a day after the student attended a religious conference, where he met Guru and took his appointment for a personal meet.

(They don’t wish to spend time in casual talks, so are speaking to the point)

RS: Hello Sir. I’m here with a question

Guru: Please tell me

RS: I thought about it many times as to why do people worship when God is not there? Don’t you think it’s foolish?

Guru: Okay. Let’s go this way. Can you see a thought?

RS: (After thinking for a while) We don’t, if I’m not wrong

Guru: Then what is thought. Can you define it?

RS: Hmm…According to me, a thought gets its definition by its implementation, and can’t be seen

Guru: What do you do to implement something?

RS: Think and plan

Guru: So, thought existed before implementation. Therefore, it need not depend on implementation for definition. Right?

RS: (Thinking for a while) Hmm… Yes. But we could only see implementation, and not the thought, right?

Guru: Yes. But, can you deny thought’s existence because you are not seeing it?

RS: No

Guru: That means it’s there, the fact is ‘we are not able to see it’

RS: Yes

Discussion Takes a Different Turn

Guru: In a similar way, God is similar to thought that is not visible, but can be seen in implementation and cannot be denied in existence

RS: Thought is followed by an action, which we refer to as implementation. Where’s the implementation in case of God?

Guru: Life. Yes. God is managing the living.

RS: How is that? It’s Me who is managing all the things with the help of my body parts to make myself alive.

Guru: Oh! Mind is thinking, ears are hearing, and all other body parts are performing their roles, and each of them have a name and respective functioning. Body parts are working among themselves in collaboration. What’s that you are doing?

By the way what is Me you are referring to. Is that any body part or something else?

RS: It’s me, the name given by my parents

Guru: Then what is Me before being named and after being dead?

RS: A flesh!

Guru: Flesh means the flesh that is composed of and filled within the body in the form of various body parts, which will not stay long. In that case, who is Me then?

RS: Thinking…with no answer to reply

Guru: In the entire process, who is Me is where the answer lies for your question on ‘God’.

When you are dead, people say ‘’he left his body or he is dead’’. In this statement, in the ‘he has left the body’ phrase, who are they referring to? And, who is other ‘he’ in the ‘he is dead’ part of the sentence? If he is same in both the cases, why is the difference in his state of existence: one says ‘left’ and the other says ‘dead’.

In the second case, it’s the body that is dead and so, no case of ‘he’. Now, who is that ‘he’ that has left? according to the first case.

So, the answer is “Body is just a flesh and there is some energy/Chaitanyam beyond the functioning of body parts acting as a source of energy to every part, in absence of which, body parts are paralyzed. For example, ‘a paralytic body’ with some parts paralysed or ‘sleep’, where sense doesn’t work even if the parts are functional in state. Chaitanyam is making the difference.

What is that Chaitanyam? It’s called ‘God’, which is also the actual Me surrounded by a body flesh. That is also not visible as you said in the start. For that, you need to search in and out with keen observation.

RS: Hmm (Remains thinking) with a question inside on ‘how to search and find it?’

Deciding between Right and Wrong

The common challenge everyone faces is when it comes to deciding on something, in terms of right and wrong. In a general psychological perspective, something that works in favor of us appears right and something that doesn’t seem favoring is termed as wrong and not-suitable. This is the basic tendency in which we involve in while deciding on something. But, I don’t think that’s the correct way of dealing with it. You are wrong if you think that its only you who is acting in the aforementioned manner, while deciding on right and wrong. Because, its the ego that is playing on the decision and pushing you to go with the same. To the fact, the actual reality lies beneath, which is usually called ‘inner conscious’ or ‘conscience’. This is what that can guide you with the correct answer.

Might seem something philosophical or beyond reality, but, yes that’s the truth. You can’t come to a conclusion just by reading this article. If you want to realize the truth, then listen to your inner sense called conscience, while deciding on something. Of course, your ego may stop you from doing that, but try your level best. Something inside, is trying to guide you. Observe and listen to it once, you will feel the actual truth and reality.

Is meditating observing breathe?

We see many defining meditation as the process of observing/concentrating breathe. According to experts in the related field, concentrating on air flow may, in fact, lead to negative effects most of the times, as air, apart from good, also contains other particulate matter, which might be harmful. So, concentrating on negative things might result in negative. Instead, the real method would be concentrating on ‘atman’. Again a hurdle, as ‘atman’/Prana inside, which is not visible/can’t be felt, immediately upon closing eyes. So, we will need a medium, which is ‘Japa’, a meditative repetition of name/some mantra (suggested by guru) or just the supreme sound, ‘Aum’, which is a matrix of all sounds. Meditating on the same takes you into deep Trans, where you feel the inner ‘atman’.

Who is satisfying whom?

Ego is the cause of most problems. Hope you agree with me! In fact, this is the inner feeling that makes us act according to it, thus dumping us in unnecessary consequences. We keep coming across the word ‘ego’, but did ever think of asking self: What exactly the ‘ego’ is? Why is it present? What it does? What does it want to do with you? Why is it acting on you? What is that its gaining from you? What is that you are getting from it? If you have ever asked self,  then you would definitely be fighting with your ego! This article has answers!

Here it goes…’Me’ and ‘Mine’ are two important words that define what an ego is and these are the sources from which, ego originates. We use these words on a regular basis to exhibit/protect/prove our existence. But, did you ever notice that you are also feeding an emotion called ‘ego’ by proud utterance of these words, which in fact, are putting you in troublesome mental activity.

‘Me’ is to define self, then ‘mine’ speaks about ‘qualities/preferences of me’. When you say preferences, that means you are interested in something and you wish to have it. What if you don’t get that you want? You get pissed off/depressed/mood-off. Then, what will you do? You try ways to get it. That means, you are indirectly about to face some consequences (good/bad) that come in your way towards getting what you wanted. Good consequences let you achieve what you want and bad ones may stop, resulting either in happiness (if you achieve)/struggle (if you’re unable to).

So, here is where you should have think about twice. If its happiness, your are happy inside and you move on. What if you fail? Does your inner sense allows you to ignore and move on? I bet, not at all! Its going to push you to go for it, (note this) even if you don’t want to after realization. Ultimately, its none other than you who will be facing the consequences.

So, to put it simple, your so-called ego is ‘using you’ to get satisfied. If you make it happy, that’s fine, if not, you cant be peaceful until you satisfy it, irrespective of the consequences you would face! So, who is controlling whom? What is that you are achieving by satisfying your ego? Think! The solution is simple, “Don’t go by your ego, instead, try to identify what is good and what’s not, for which, you will have to ask your ‘heart/inner conscious’.

It works, but, not that easy. Try out!
